Discuss the ways in which the extract constructs representations of age

Within this 4.51 seconds long clip there are many representations of age, some Positive and some Negative. We open the clip with two men walking together in the same shot closely together, the juxtaposition between these two characters are friends and they are working together towards a goal meaning that adults work together well and are mature. They are both wearing dull, dark coloured clothing which may represent youth’s perception of the older generations. The sound when the older characters are in shot is a very soft country guitar playing music with birds chirping for the ambience of the location and this presents adults as peaceful by putting them in the countryside where it is known to be the most peaceful place in England. The adult male at one point puts his trust in the female youth when he gives her the keys to the van and he asks her to drive into town, shortly after she crashes the van and they all run to save her and see if she is ok, this enforces the stereotype that youths are troublemakers and adults are always there to pick up the pieces. Just before the girl gets into the van you can see that she is wearing brighter colours such as “Blue” and “White” which is a stereotype to young people’s fashion that they always wear bright clothes to represent Youths outlook on life that there futures may be bright and hopeful, although the colours are bright the fit of the clothes are baggy insisting that youths are messy and don’t care about their appearance. The edits between the shots of the whole clip are just cuts from shot to shot no matter the age of the characters I’m quite short for things to say about this but at a stretch I would say that all ages have the same cut edits due to them being connected in the story and them not being separated by age. When the youths first came into shot the sound is very interesting because when younger people are in the shot sharp piano notes are played that are tense insisting that youths are troublemakers and this is a negative stereotype towards youth and the music is a warning of the following happenings of the girl crashing into another car. The scene where the adult man finds out that the young girl has been lying to him about her education, when he confronts her about it he grabs her arm and pulls her over to one side, he has complete control physically and verbally over the situation which is a stereotype that adults have control over youths, the camera shots show that adults are the authority as he is looking down on her. Whenever Adults are in shot inside the house everything is in perfect place reflecting that adults are tidy natured and keep their lives in order, though when we get a look into the young girls room we see that it is messy around her mirror with pictures and pieces of torn paper stuck all around it enforcing the stereotype that teenagers are messy and don’t care about the condition of where they live.
